Tips & Best Practices

Getting the most from your skincare routine isn't just about the products you use—it's about how you use them. These expert tips and best practices will help you build a sustainable, effective routine that works with your skin and your lifestyle.

Patch Testing New Products

Patch testing is your first line of defense against adverse reactions. It's especially important for those with sensitive skin, allergies, or sensory sensitivities who want to avoid unexpected reactions.

Why Patch Testing Matters

  • Prevents full-face reactions - Catch sensitivities before they become widespread problems
  • Identifies specific triggers - Helps you pinpoint which ingredients or products don't work for you
  • Reduces sensory overwhelm - Avoids the distress of unexpected burning, itching, or texture changes
  • Builds confidence - Gives you control over your skincare experience

The Two-Step Patch Test Method

Step 1: Arm Test (24-48 hours)

Where: Inner forearm or behind the ear

How: Apply a small amount (about the size of a pea) to clean, dry skin

What to watch for: Redness, rash, itching, burning, swelling, bumps, or any uncomfortable sensations

If no reaction: Proceed to Step 2

If reaction occurs: Do not use the product on your face

Special Considerations for Neurodiverse Individuals

Sensory check: Beyond allergic reactions, pay attention to how the product feels. If the texture, scent, or sensation is uncomfortable or distracting, it's okay to not use it—even if there's no allergic reaction.

Texture tolerance: Some products may be perfectly safe but sensorially overwhelming (too sticky, too greasy, strong scent). I have spent over 18 months of research, development and testing to ensure all sensory concerns have been addressed, however not all skin care suits everyone, and ultimately your comfort is what matters.

Sensurae formulas: Our formulas have been specifically designed to suit Neurodiverse needs. Our products designed work if used twice daily (best results) once daily or every other day. We understand that some days can be overwhelming , mornings can be rough, and doing 'another routine' can cause anxiety.

When using a new product it is completely normal that a small break-out may occur. This is generally a sign that the product is working, as it is cleaning out the pores and bringing any clogged pores to the surface for treatment.

Storage and Shelf Life

Proper storage extends product life, maintains effectiveness, and prevents contamination. Here's how to keep your Sensurae products in optimal condition.

Optimal Storage Conditions

Temperature

Ideal: Cool, stable temperature (15-30°C / 59-77°F)

Avoid: Extreme heat or cold, temperature fluctuations

Why it matters: Heat can degrade active ingredients and cause products to separate; cold can change texture

Light Exposure

Ideal: Stored away from direct sunlight

Avoid: Windowsills, bright bathrooms, direct UV exposure

Why it matters: UV light breaks down antioxidants and active ingredients, reducing effectiveness

Humidity

Ideal: Dry environment with stable humidity

Avoid: Steamy bathrooms (if possible), leaving lids open

Why it matters: Excess moisture can encourage bacterial growth and product degradation

Best Storage Locations

Good Storage Spots:

  • Shaving cabinet or closed cupboard in the bathroom
  • Cool, dark cabinet away from heat sources
  • Dedicated skincare organizer in a climate-controlled room

Avoid These Spots:

  • Near windows or in direct sunlight
  • Above or near radiators, heaters, or stoves
  • In the car (temperature extremes)
  • Refrigerator (unless specifically recommended)

Understanding Shelf Life

PAO Symbol (Period After Opening): Look for the open jar symbol with a number (e.g., 12M = 12 months after opening)

General Shelf Life Guidelines

  • Cleansers: 2 years unopened, 12 months after opening
  • Moisturisers: 2 years unopened, 12 months after opening
  • Serums with actives: 1-2 years unopened, 6-12 months after opening
  • Blemish patches: 2 years, use within package timeframe

Signs a Product Has Expired

  • Color change - Darkening, yellowing, or other discoloration
  • Smell change - Rancid, sour, or off odor (even if originally fragrance-free)
  • Texture change - Separation that won't remix, clumping, or graininess
  • Reduced effectiveness - Product no longer delivers expected results
  • Skin reaction - New irritation or sensitivity to a previously tolerated product

When in doubt, throw it out. Using expired products can cause irritation, reduce effectiveness, or introduce bacteria to your skin.

Hygiene Best Practices

  • Wash hands before use - Prevents transferring bacteria into products
  • Use clean tools - Spatulas or pumps are more hygienic than fingers for jars
  • Close lids tightly - Prevents air exposure and contamination
  • Don't share products - Especially not directly from the container
  • Keep packaging clean - Wipe down bottles and jars regularly
  • Don't add water - Never dilute products or add water to containers

When to Expect Results

One of the biggest skincare mistakes is giving up too soon. Real skin transformation takes time. Here's what to expect and when, so you can set realistic goals and stay motivated.

Understanding Your Skin's Timeline

The 28-Day Skin Cycle: Your skin naturally renews itself approximately every 28 days (this slows to 40-60 days as you age). This means most changes require at least one full skin cycle to become visible.

Why patience matters: Skincare works at the cellular level. You're not seeing instant surface changes, you're supporting your skin's natural processes, which take time to show results.

Realistic Timelines by Concern

Hydration & Moisture

Initial results: Immediate to 24 hours

Full results: 1 week

What you'll notice: Skin feels softer, plumper, less tight; makeup applies more smoothly

Calming & Soothing

Initial results: 3-7 days

Full results: 2-4 weeks

What you'll notice: Reduced redness, less reactive skin, fewer flare-ups

Blemish Improvement

Initial results: 2-4 weeks (existing blemishes)

Full results: 8-12 weeks (overall skin clarity)

What you'll notice: Faster healing of active blemishes, fewer new stress-related breakouts, improved texture

Note: May experience initial purging (2-4 weeks) with active ingredients

Texture Refinement

Initial results: 4-6 weeks

Full results: 8-12 weeks

What you'll notice: Smoother skin, smaller-looking pores, more even surface

What Affects Your Timeline

  • Age - Older skin has slower cell turnover (longer timelines)
  • Skin concern severity - Deeper issues take longer to resolve
  • Consistency - Sporadic use delays results but results still occur
  • Overall routine - Supporting products enhance active ingredient effectiveness
  • Lifestyle factors - Sleep, stress, diet, hydration all impact skin
  • Season - Some concerns improve faster in certain weather conditions

Common Skincare Mistakes to Avoid

Even with the best products, common mistakes can sabotage your results. Here are the most frequent pitfalls and how to avoid them.

1. Over-Cleansing

The mistake: Washing your face more than twice daily, using harsh cleansers, or scrubbing too vigorously

Why it's harmful: Strips natural oils, damages skin barrier, triggers more oil production, causes irritation

The fix: Cleanse maximum twice daily (morning and evening), use gentle pH-balanced cleansers like Calming Blemish Control Cleanser, massage gently with fingertips never scrub, if your skin feels tight after cleansing you're over-doing it

2. Skipping Moisturiser

The mistake: Avoiding moisturiser because you have oily or blemish-prone skin

Why it's harmful: Dehydrated skin produces more oil to compensate, weakens barrier function, makes skin more reactive

The fix: Everyone needs moisturiser even oily skin, choose lightweight non-comedogenic formulas like our Calming Lightweight Moisturiser, apply to damp skin for better absorption, hydration does not equal oiliness you can be oily and dehydrated simultaneously

3. Inconsistent Routine

The mistake: Using products sporadically, skipping steps, or constantly switching products

Why it's harmful: Prevents products from working, makes it impossible to identify what helps or harms, disrupts skin barrier

The fix: Commit to a simple routine you can maintain, give products 6-12 weeks before switching, if you miss a day just resume don't try to make up for it, simplicity and consistency beat complexity and sporadic use

4. Picking at Skin

The mistake: Squeezing, picking, or touching blemishes and imperfections

Why it's harmful: Spreads bacteria, causes scarring, prolongs healing, increases inflammation

The fix: Use Blemish Patches to create a physical barrier and absorb fluid, keep hands busy with fidget tools if you're prone to picking, apply spot treatments instead of touching, if you must extract see a professional, remember picking makes it worse and last longer

5. Expecting Overnight Results

The mistake: Giving up on products after a week or two

Why it's harmful: Prevents you from seeing real results, leads to product hopping, wastes money

The fix: Review the realistic timelines above, give products minimum 6-8 weeks ideally 12 weeks, take progress photos to see gradual changes, trust the process and be patient with your skin

6. Ignoring SPF

The mistake: Skipping sunscreen especially when using active ingredients

Why it's harmful: Undoes all your skincare work, causes premature aging, increases sun sensitivity from actives used in some skincare

The fix: Wear SPF 30+ daily even on cloudy days, apply as the last step of your morning routine, reapply every 2 hours if in direct sun, non-negotiable if using retinoids AHAs or vitamin C

7. Using Dirty Tools & Towels

The mistake: Reusing face towels, not cleaning makeup brushes, touching face with dirty hands

Why it's harmful: Transfers bacteria to skin, causes breakouts, spreads infection

The fix: Use clean towel or sponges each time you wash your face, wash hands before touching your face, clean makeup tools weekly, change pillowcases 2+ times per week

8. Ignoring Your Skin's Signals

The mistake: Pushing through irritation thinking it's supposed to burn or ignoring persistent issues

Why it's harmful: Damages skin barrier, creates long-term sensitivity, worsens underlying issues

The fix: Mild tingling with actives is normal burning is not, if a product consistently irritates stop using it, listen to sensory feedback discomfort matters, when in doubt strip back to basics and rebuild slowly
